Unauthorized Credit Card Charges by the Consumer Reward Network and Star Communications

Green Welling is investigating Consumer Reward Network’s (“CRN”) and Star Communications’ (“SC”) business practices. Many consumers have been charged by these companies for reports and services they say they did not order. CRN and SC may contact consumers as a telemarketer, through the mail by offering a complimentary check, or they may offer a service as an add-on during the course of an internet purchase. CRN and SC purport to sell memberships to discount clubs, discount passes, shopping sprees, gift certificates or coupons in exchange for monthly fees of $4.95 or more.

CRN and SC have a history of complaints concerning deceptive marketing and selling strategies, unauthorized charges on consumers' credit cards, and non-cancellation of memberships following cancellation requests. Consumers complain that they are often signed up for club memberships without authorization and billed for monthly or set-up charges. Complaints against CRN and SC also address the methods used to sign up unwilling consumers through complimentary checks, internet surveys and telephone solicitations. CRN and SC usually offer "free trial periods" in their programs, but make it extremely difficult to cancel membership. Even after cancellation, consumers are often still charged fees.
